Google’s UGC Fresh Data Program: a fast lane for forum posts that starts with your JSON-LD

The short version

On October 8, 2026, Google published documentation for the UGC Fresh Data Program, an application-only pipeline that lets approved user-generated-content platforms send posts and engagement signals straight to Google, separately from the Indexing API and regular crawling. To be considered, a platform needs public posts on stable URLs, creators with public profiles, active moderation, OAuth 2.0 and strictly validated JSON-LD, such as SocialMediaPosting or DiscussionForumPosting with interactionStatistic. Google says taking part does not guarantee that content appears in Search.

What Google announced

Google’s Search Central changelog lists the change on October 8, 2026 as “Added documentation on the UGC Fresh Data Program.” The new page describes the program as a way to help platforms show fresh, authentic user-generated content across features in Search. Search Engine Roundtable and Search Engine Land both reported it the same day.

SEOAST Impact Rating: A2, plan for it. This is confirmed Google documentation for a new intake program, with no penalty and no change to who can crawl your site. The Impact Rating is SEOAST’s own editorial rating, not a Google severity level.

  • A separate pipeline: approved platforms send content and engagement signals through a dedicated data-ingestion pipeline that Google says is independent of the Indexing API and of the crawling it uses for general web content.
  • For trending UGC only: the page says the program is designed exclusively for trending user-generated content.
  • No guarantee: in Google’s words, “This program doesn’t guarantee that content will appear in Search.” Applying does not guarantee participation either.

The eligibility checklist

Google lists six areas. Paraphrased closely from the documentation:

  • Content focus: the platform mainly hosts user-generated content, social posts or forum discussions, on dedicated pages with stable URLs. Profile pages and feed pages do not count.
  • Volume and audience: a high volume of UGC and a significant user base. Google does not publish a threshold.
  • Accessibility: content sits on public pages that Googlebot and users can reach. Gated content is ineligible, and every item must be attributable to a creator with a public profile.
  • Technical readiness: OAuth 2.0 API authentication, strictly validated JSON-LD, and valid schema.org markup on the URLs, such as SocialMediaPosting or DiscussionForumPosting with interactionStatistic sub-fields.
  • Moderation: no illegal content, active moderation and a way for users to report content.
  • Freshness: content sent as close to creation as possible, ideally within minutes, and engagement counters updated within 72 hours of creation.

How to apply

Platforms that meet the criteria apply through a form linked from the documentation. Google says it will respond within six to eight weeks, and detailed integration documentation is shared only with platforms that are selected.

What this means if you run a forum or community site

Most sites will not meet the volume bar. The useful part for everyone else is that Google has now written down, in one place, what it expects a clean UGC page to look like. These checks cost nothing and help ordinary crawling too.

If you are a large platform, freshness is the operational question: content within minutes and engagement counts within 72 hours means an event-driven integration, not a nightly batch job.

  • One post, one stable URL. If threads are only reachable through feeds, infinite scroll or session-dependent URLs, fix that first.
  • Public, crawlable pages. Posts behind a login or an interstitial are out of scope for this program.
  • A visible author with a public profile page for every post.
  • Markup that matches the page: DiscussionForumPosting for forum threads or SocialMediaPosting for social posts, with interactionStatistic where you show counts such as replies or likes. Google asks for strictly validated JSON-LD, so a block that fails to parse is the first thing to rule out.
  • Moderation you can point to: a report button and an active moderation process.

What SEOAST checks, and what it does not

SEOAST audits one URL at a time from the server HTML. For this topic, its structured-data check tells you two things: whether the JSON-LD on the page parses, and which @type values are present, so you can see whether DiscussionForumPosting or SocialMediaPosting is actually in the HTML your server returns.

It does not validate individual properties such as interactionStatistic, it does not check eligibility for this program, and it does not track whether your content appears in Search. SEOAST does not query ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews. For property-level validation, use Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator alongside it.
